UPS deploys RFID across US network

Logistics Manager Stand: 719

The technology is now embedded across delivery vehicles, sorting facilities and more than 5,500 UPS Store locations in the USA, enabling automatic package detection throughout the shipping journey.

UPS has invested more than $100 million in the development and deployment of the technology.

The move positions UPS as the first major logistics provider to implement RFID sensing at scale across an integrated network.

Matt Guffey, executive vice president and chief commercial and strategy officer at UPS, said the rollout represents a significant step change in supply chain transparency:  “With RFID embedded into labels, on our vehicles and in our loading bays, customers benefit from clear visibility during the entire shipping process – from pick up to delivery, with no manual scanning required. The result is commerce that is smarter and predictable.”

Unlike conventional barcode scanning, RFID allows packages to be tracked automatically as they move through the network, improving accuracy and reducing the risk of missed or delayed updates.
